In this video, I explain what the six beliefs are and in future videos, I’ll explain each one in detail so you can avoid the problems that befall those who slavishly follow these beliefs.

TRANSCRIPT:

Greetings friends. Ben, here. I'm talking to you in this short series of videos, about six beliefs, six ideas, six stories, which I held to be really true and important for growing my own successful business ideas and beliefs and stories, which I kind of held on to tightly, but came to realise actually these were not the route to commercial success, to commercial growth, but the opposite.

The second of the ideas that I'm talking about that I want to talk to you about today is "growth is good". How common an idea is that every report, whenever businesses are talking about what they do, it's the extent to which they grow. Whenever the economy is talking about how successful it is, it's about percentage of growth versus percentage of decline. The growth is held to be all good. It's the thing that we need to be striving for year on year growth, but this kind of relentless quest, this relentless hunger, this pursuit, it knows no bounds.

It is the definition of a hamster wheel. Like I said, I bought into the idea too, that growth was good. That growth is the thing to be aiming for. But the thing that I came to realize is that growth, particularly financial growth. I mean, money is a really poor motivator. It might serve you well, one or two mornings. It might give you a little spring in your step and that kind of drive to get out of the bed, one or two days. But as a long-term sustained motivating force, money is a terrible motivator. And by extension of that growth is a false prophet. The thing that I suggest, the thing that I contend with my invitation to you is not to chase growth, but to chase change instead. And I'll talk about that later. I'll talk about that in a separate, separate video, but this idea that growth is good is an idea we've inherited from all of the stories around us, but it's not serving you. Well, growth is a false prophet chasing change instead.
